Super Bowl 2019 under an ETFE film roof from Bavaria

The venue in 2019 is the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta – a stadium of superlatives. In 2017, film specialist NOWOFOL from Siegsdorf played a decisive role in designing the state-of-the-art football stadium with an ETFE film roof and façade shell.

When the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots face each other in the NFL’s 53rd Super Bowl on February 3rd, 800 million people around the world will be looking at a project by the Bavarian film specialist NOWOFOL. The roof construction made of ETFE film gives the football stadium in Atlanta a mobile and stable roof in an extraordinary design. The shape, which looks like eight flower petals, is reminiscent of the mechanism of a camera lens when opening and closing. The ETFE film roof made in Bavaria not only protects the 75,000 fans in the stadium from wind and weather but also looks absolutely stunning like the transparent façade elements made of ETFE film, it gives the stadium its inimitable look.

High-tech films enable extraordinary architecture

The fluoropolymer films made by the Bavarian manufacturer NOWOFOL are internationally popular for stadium constructions on a grand scale because they enable an exciting stylistic idiom with a low weight per unit area. The special films from Siegsdorf were also used for the Minnesota Vikings Stadium (Minneapolis), the Miami Dolphins Stadium and the bright blue stadium of Club Puebla in Mexico.

NOWOFOL’s film membranes are more flexible than traditional materials in terms of shape yet still offer excellent mechanical strength, weather resistance and high light transmission for unclouded daylight inside. Around 50,000 m² of ETFE film from Bavaria were used in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Permanent innovation: Infrared-absorbent ETFE film

The film specialists at NOWOFOL are known for their high degree of innovation.  With an infrared-absorbent ETFE roof and façade membrane, a new global development is being offered on the market. The special film absorbs the infrared radiation to prevent excessive heating of the roofed space, which is a great advantage, especially in regions with warmer climates. This material is already being used successfully for the partial roofing of shopping centers. At the stadium in Atlanta, flexible shading was solved with printing.  Whether in subtropical summer heat or in rain and snow, the spectators in Atlanta can enjoy the event undisturbed. The printability of the ETFE films and the wide range of colors make the special films from Bavaria a favorite with architects and builders.

In addition to the use of ETFE films for roofs and façades of sports stadiums, shopping malls and swimming pools, demand is also growing in greenhouse construction due to their high tensile strength and high level of light transmission. Andreas Freutsmiedl, Sales Manager for Fluoropolymer Films, says: "ETFE film has a great future in greenhouse construction. The films currently used

for roofing in greenhouses last for only a short period of time and are destroyed by wind and weather. ETFE film is a rugged alternative. The first roofs with ETFE film have been in existence for more than 40 years, and the film is still in perfect condition. In addition, ETFE film is 100% recyclable after use.”

World market leader from Siegsdorf

NOWOFOL is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of ETFE film. This film has been produced at the company headquarters in Siegsdorf since 1982. NOWOFOL has 160 employees and is a real world market leader, not only in the production of UV stable ETFE films but also for monoaxially stretched polyolefin films. These extremely tear-resistant films are used in the packaging industry, in technical applications and other special solutions.

Perfect example for thinking future with NOWOFLON ETFE for Architecture

Aesthetics from a new angle! A striking membrane façade was erected at a Merck KGaA
technology building in Darmstadt Germany. This convinces not only with design, but also
with functionality.

Looking more closely at this façade, one might think that energy production was in the
foreground. But the project partner, Taiyo Europe and OPVIUS, wanted to shed light on the
superficial architecture with this eye-catching façade. The different forms of the organic solar
cell (OPV) modules have been integrated into the NOWOFLON ETFE film in an artistic and
modern way. So the aesthetics is in the foreground, but at the same time the advantage of
the organic photovoltaic can be used for environmentally friendly energy production.

The entire façade covers an area of approx. 300 m². Distributed on the NOWOFLON ETFE
film, there are 1578 integrated OPV modules, which thus form an effective OPV area. The
individual OPV modules are integrated in the color-printed, semitransparent NOWOFLON
ETFE film and thus create a harmonious and perfectly shaped façade. The necessary
stability and steadfastness is ensured by a steel construction with a newly developed
aluminum frame profile and special comb plates.

To sum up, this is a fascinating project with an innovative step towards the future. Because
finally comes together with ETFE film and OPV, what belongs together.

Functional and creativ planed by architect HENN Berlin, Germany.

Bright and warm: Nowofol creates ideal playing conditions at Saint Petersburg stadium

The 2018 World Cup in Russia is just around the corner. At the new stadium in Saint Petersburg, we are helping to make this global sporting event a success. The new stadium has a capacity of almost 68,000, three times that of its predecessor. It features a state-of-the-art moving roof that uses a special transparent material: our Nowoflon ET film. This material covers the roof of the stadium and ensures the perfect light and temperature conditions for soccer, even when the roof is closed.

Our EFTE film Nowoflon ET allows light and UV radiation to permeate. It provides non-flammability properties and even cleans itself. Despite its low weight, the material is capable of withstanding heavy loads. Its high durability makes Nowoflon ET a premium product ideal for a prestigious event like the World Cup. In addition, EFTE is fully recyclable, making it easy to dispose of when no longer needed. This ensures that the new stadium is also a sustainable one.

Over half a million square feet of Nowoflon ET film installed

Located on the Baltic Sea, Saint Petersburg has a harsh climate that places high demands on the material. This was taken into account when planning the roof and choosing the material. Nowoflon ET has a thermal service range of -200 to +150°C and a melting point of 265°C. The EFTE cover on the roof of the stadium consists of 96 cushions, with 36 located on the fixed roof section and 60 on the moving section. This called for a lot of EFTE film. To be precise, over half a million square feet of Nowoflon ET film were installed.

When designing the roof, Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa was inspired by a spaceship, which made transparent film the material of choice. Nowoflon ET films are available in almost any color. When designing the correct color gradation, we cooperate closely with architects to ensure the best possible interplay between light and color to create world-class architecture.
